Generation 7 (Great, Great, Great, Great Grandparents):

Jeff’s Side of the Family in the 7th Generation:

Thomann/Von Brunn Side:

DEAD END: At the time of this writing Jacob Thomann (1829-1898) and Anna Barbara Von Brunn (1831-1909) are the OLDEST KNOWN generation of the Thomanns in this line of the Thomann Family that exists on FamilySearch.org.

Jacob Thomann, born in Kerne, Switzerland, and his wife, Anna Barbara Von Brunn, from Eaden Germany, shared the dream that life could be better in America. The journey that lay ahead for these young immigrants would be a most difficult one. The sailing vessels of the time were built more for cargo than for passenger carriage. However, Jacob and Anna were successful in their quest and arrived safely in America

Jacob and Anna were married on May 17, 1860 in St Louis, Missouri.

As stated on the Find a Grave Site, “Jacob was born in Switzerland. His Parents & Siblings are a mystery to us right now.”

Jacob is buried in the same grave as Cecilia Thomann (1918-1957), his great Granddaughter (daughter of Jacob P Thomann (son of Adam Thomann and Carolina (Vogel) Thomann) and Adella F (Luettig) Thomann).

Anna is buried in the same grave as Edward Christian Ernst Thomann (August 4, 1908 – February 22, 1910), her Great-Grandson (son of Jacob P Thomann and Adella F (Luettig) Thomann).

Jacob Thomann (February 2, 1829 – February 20, 1898) and Anna Barbara (Von Brunn) Thomann (November 13, 1831 –  March 25, 1909) only had one child, Adam Thomann (October 29, 1859 – May 4, 1912).  This fact makes me smile when people say that we all are children of Adam, because in our line of the Thomann Family, we truly are descendants of Adam.

According to 1880 Census information a Laborer from Germany lived in the same home with Jacob, Anna and Adam by the name of Antone Bowdinstel.  Not much is known about this individual other than what is in the Census.  At the time of that Census Antone was 25, Adam was 20, Anna was 49, and Jacob was 52.

Scarborough/Eason (or Thigpen?) Side:

  • Major James Scarborough (576) ( Birth : 29 November 1774 – Death : 1 March 1836 ) ( Father of John Rasberry Scarborough (288) )
    • James Scarborough was the son of David Scarborough (1720-1774) and Sarah (1720-1786)
    • Notes regarding James from Familysearch Researchers:
      • James was Born November 29, 1748 in Southampton, Virginia, British Colonial America, and died on March 1, 1836 in Saratoga, Edgecombe, North Carolina, United States.  His burial was on a family cemetary in Wilson County, North Carolina in 1836
      • lineage
Major James Scarborough was the son of David and Sarah Scarborough, son of William Scaboth (Scarborough), and a grandson of William Scarborough, of Bacon’s Rebellion. The family had remained in Virginia for three generations before coming to North Carolina-in Surry, in Isle of Wight, and then in Southampton.

      • Military Service
Revolutionary War– obtained the rank of Major

      • Note

Major James supposedly had 5 wives and 25 children. Served in the Revolutionay War. For now, only Allen is shown. Name of first wife is unknown, although possibly a Lawrence or Thigpen. familysearch.com record indicates 5 wives (unknown, Grace King, Penelope Eason, Penelope Raspberry, Martha Eason.) but the Penelope’s seem to be the same. Hence, I can only identify 4 wives. One internet source (at ancestry.com, Jan Allison) mentions a Penelope Lester. Another ancestry.com source (Charles Lucas) has a citation that according to the DAR Patriot Index, Vol. 3, page 2579, he was married 3 times: unknown, Mrs. Penelope Eason, Martha Tartt Eason. Have copy of transcript of his will. The will cites wife Martha and daughter Zilly. Also cites some Easons, such as daughter Polly Eason, son John R. Scarborough. Will recorded in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina. Have copy of transcript of various facts about his request for pension for serving in the Revolutionary War. “Southern Kith and Kin” book has quite a bit about Major James Scarborough. Has pictures of old house. Children under first wife are listed as Lawrence, Allen, Noah, Jonathan, David, Simeon, William, Lemuel, . (Note: Allen is in our descendency.) Name of first wife not known, possibly a Lawrence. o In his marriage to Grace, his 2nd, it is believed that his son was Isaac. Daughter Zillah (Zilly.) o His 3rd marriage was to Penelope Eason (b. 3/26/1749, d. 10/16/1822.) Maiden name was Raspberry? Children: Polly and John Raspberry. o Marriage to Martha Tartt Eason, 11/18/1823 agreement, although marriage may have been in 1826. From one source ( affidavit of Silas Scarborough, 4/24/1914; Isaac Pope Scarborough, 11/28/1913; Joab L. Scarborough, copy of letter in Isaac’s statement) reference is made to Major James Scarborough and his father James Allen Scarborough. James Allen is stated to be the King of Wales. I believe that this is very much not true. I cannot find any other support for this claim. One message in the genealogy.com forum states that the King of Wales claim is not true. To me it is reasonably clear that Maj. James’ father was David.

    • Notes from familysearch researchers:

      Note

First wife. Possibly a Lawrence (sons and grandsons had this name) or Elizabeth Thigpen. One interesting note is that ancestry.com and familysearch.org shows that Elizabeth Thigpen, born within 10 years of 1750 (familysearch.org cites Nov 1749) , was the daughter of James Thigpen and Elizabeth Lawrence. There are postings in both of these cites by submitters that Maj. James was married to Elizabeth Thigpen. Elizabeth was born about 1750, died about 1774. One submitter at familysearch.com lists a spouse as a Lawrence. “Souther Kith and Kin” suspects name was Lawrence. Last Changed: 11 December 2013 by

John Broyles, the 1717 immigrant, died in 1733.  His will, written 7 March 1731 and probated 5 February 1733 (Spotsylvania W.B. A P. 209), mentions his wife and “my children, male and female.”  The will was proven by Urseley Broyle and Paultus [Balthasar or Paul] Blankenbaker.

According to  “The Germanna Record”, Number Eighteen, 2008, The son Jacob Broyles was naturalized 27 January 1742 in the Orange Court.  He married Mary Catherine Fleshman, the daughter of Cyriacus Fleischmann.  They were the parents of twelve children: Adam Catherine, Nicholas, Cyrus, Elizabeth, Jacob, Peter, Michael, Joh, Zacharias, Matthias, and Mary.  Except for Mary for whom nothing is known, the children lived to adulthood and married.

      • Note

from John Wayland.  Came over with his father and was an adult when he arrived from Germany.

      • Note

Came with his parents aboard the ship True Love 1717 to America.  Jacob was 12 and traveled with his father, mother, brother and sister.  It appears that all of his children lived to adulthood.  His descendants comprise the Broyles family, while his brother conrad was progenitor of the Briles line. 2 May 1727 Jacob Bryoll proved his right to tkae up land.  He apparently sold this right to Jacob Manspoil, on the same day his father did the same and patented 200 acres.  jacob would thus appear to be on his own and probably recently married. 28 Sep 1728 Jacob Broil patented 400 acres in Spotsylvania co Va St George’s parish in the great fork of the Rappahanock riber on jacob Crigler’s line. 1734 Jacob Broill is taxed for 1 tithe in the precinct of John Mikell. 28 Jul 1737 Jacob and Mary Catharine Broyle buy 156 acres of land by the river side from Siriakus Fleischman.  On same date Ziriakus sold 200 acres to Henry Sluchter and wife Sarah.  In 1743 he sold his remaining lands to Peter fleshman.  We know from church records of neuenburg in Germany that Ziriakus had two suriving children, Peter and Maria Catharine by his wife Anna Barbara.  As well he had a stepson Heinrich Sluchter by one of Anna’s previous husbands. 1738 taxed as 1 tithable in the precinct of John Mickell 1739 1 tithable in the precinct of Orange co Va Jacob Broyl is mentioned in the suit Jacob Stover vs. George Home. 28 Aug 1741 Jacob Broyles sues John Sutton claiming that in Dec 1739 he had sold cattle and hogs to a Thomas Botts who was to pay for them the following Mar, Apr, or market time, but who had sold them to Sutton and run off. 22 Feb 1742 Jacob Broyl witnesses deed of John Thomas to Michael Thomas 23 Jan 1743 Jacob Broyle witnesses sale of land by Ziriakus Fleshman to Peter fleshman 29 Jan 1743 Isaac Smith sues Ludwig Fisher, Jacob Broyle is security for the defendent 10 Aug 1743 He witnesses the will of John Nicholas Blankenbeeker,  The will is probated 22 Sep 1743 and Jacob Broil and eldes t son Zacharias are named executors. `11 Aug 1743 he witnesses a codicil to the above will. 26 Jul 1744 Jacob and Conrad Broil convey to Adam Wilhite 200 acres of land patented 24 Jun 1726 by Johnn Broil this was their inheritance and would indicate that their mother had died. 25 Mar 1746 Jacob Brayell reports as executor the value of henry Fireback’s property. 25 Mar 1752 Jacob Breil is sponsor at the baptism of Zacharuias son of Zacharias Blankenbaker, born this date.  Catharine Breilin was a sponsor of other of Zacharias children 16 May 1754 Jacob buys 200 acres from John Shafer 19 Mary 1761 Jacob sells to his son Cyrus 200 acres for love and affection.  This land is part of a patent to Ciriakus and peter Fleshman.  it had been sold to Jacob by John Shafter on 16 May 1754. 3 Nov 1761 Jacob’s will is written 17 Jan 1763  we the subscribers have met at the plantation of Jacob Broiles dec’d. and have valued and appraised his estate.  Adam Wayland, Adam Wilhit, Adam Yager.  The estate valuation is listed in [3] 1:31. the date would appear to be in error because estate valuations took place after the will was proven and the esxecutor or administrator was given power to settle the estate.  Generally speaking, the probate proving a will occurred quickly after death, while it often took months or years to settle an estate.  A possible explanation given that the entry was for the first court in a new year, is that the clerk forgot the year had changed to 1764. 21 Apr 1763 Jacob Brayell was named executor of the will of Matthias Blankenbaker.  The court appointed John Blankenbecker as executor, which means that Jacob was either incapacitated or dead at this time. 19 May 1763 Jacob’s will is probated to wit Samuel Klug, Peter fleshman, Robert fleshmann 18 Nov 1771 Mary Catharine Broyle, Adam Broile, Matthias and Eve Broile sell 166 acres to John Glassell.  This appears to refer to the 156 acres from Jacob’s will. 1776 on the 17th Sunday after Trinity, Catharina Breilin is l isted on the communion roll of Hebron Church.

Christened 3-26-1705, Otisheim, Wirttemburg, Germany Deat h w/p 5-19-1763, Culpeper county, VA. jacob proved his impo rtation 02 May 1727 and was granted right to take up 50 acr es.  This particular right was not exercised but he sold i t to Jacobmanspoil, before 03 Oct 1734, on which date mansp oil received patent for 400 acres based upon the importatio n of 3 persons of which Jacob Bryell was one. This fact o f course does not indicate that any relationship existed be tween Jacob Manspoiland Jacob Broyles. On Sep 28, 1728, Jac ob Broyles was granted patent for 400 acres, the descriptio n of which is as follows:  “Beginning at three pines Corne r to Jacob Crigelar and runeth thence with the said Crigele rs line north seventy five degrees west two hundred pole t o the gum white oak and red oak in the said Crigelers line thence north fifteen degrees east three hundred and twent y poles to a gum paplar and hiccory, thence south seventy f ive degrees, east two hundred pole to achestnut and two whi te oak on a small run side, thence south fifteen degrees, w est three hundred and twenty pol to the beginning.” This tr act of land was an exact rectangle, one mile long and five- eights wide and its greatest length was from the southwes t to northeast.  It lay about 5 miles north and a little we st of the present Madison courthouse, about on-half mile no rth of the Robinson River, and its southwest corner was abo ut one mile due east of the present village, Criglersville . On 28 Jul 1737 Ziriakus Fleishman sold to Jacob Broyles a nd Mary Catherine Broyles 156 acres of land.  The descripti on is as follows: “Beginning at three siccamore trees by th e river side thence north 50 degrees east 235 poles to tw o whiteoakes thence norwest 55 poles to three pines thenc e south 50 degrees west 440 poles to two white oakes thenc e south 15 degrees east 58 poles thence north 55 degrees ea st to the beginnining.” This land was the lower part of Cyriacus Fleshman’s patent of 1726. It  lay about three and one -half miles north of the Madison courthouse.  Its greates length was from the northeast to southwest and at about it s middle the Robinson River divided it.  Jacob Broyles in his will of 1761 mentions this tract of 156 acres as the land on which he was then living.  Possibly he never lived o n his 400 acres tract. He mentions the 400 acres in his wil l, dividing it equally among four of his sons.   Verne Rese r. “Data from Culpeper county, VA., Will Book A, 1744-1776 , pages 284-287, Will of Jacob Broil, dated 3 Nov 1761. • Note

From Christopher Uhl’s will we know he was married two more times.  Once to a Mary and once to Margaret.  However, we don’t know if he had kids with either one.  We can assume that Mary might be the mother of his youngest 4 children, but there’s no way to prove either way since there are no documents.  So, therefore, for now, it is best to leave all of the children listed under Christopher and Eva.  Christopher and Eva had 6 kids before immigrating to the US during the Germanna era.  It is unknown if Eva immigrated with Christopher or if he came alone and had his youngest 4 children with another wife here.

Hans Koch (Johann Georg Koch) and his son George Adam Koch are listedas arriving at Philadelphia on the Snow “Francis and Ann” on May 30,1741. Only heads of families and males of sixteen years and over werelisted. The International Genealogical Index of the Morman FamilyHistory Library shows Hans having a wife named Margaret. The storycame down in my family that two sisters named Mary Etta and Rebecahcame, did not like America and returned to Luxemburgh. The Cooksreally seem to have originated in Wurttemburg. They may have remainedfor a while in Luxemburgh. This is a small mystery, not resolved. . At least one of the three people listed as submitters knew that JohannGeorg (Hans) Koch was the father of George Adam Cook but they do notseem to know what happened to him after arrival in Philadelphia. Nordo they seem to know that there were other siblings to George Adam. All family members who did not go to and remain in Franklin County,Pennsylvania were lost to them. Hans (Johann Georg) Koch led other family members to the ShenandoahValley of Virginia. Then in about 1764 or 1765, probably after having moved south to theShenandoah Valley, he and his sons, probably using the Braddock Road, along with others crossed the mountains westward to the territorycontrolled by the Ohio Company and the Colony of Virginia. Theysettled at a post called Redstone, now called Brownsville,Pennsylvania. In February, 1768 the commander of the post at Redstone was ordered byGeneral Gage to order the settlers, Hans Cook included by name, toleave on penalty of death without benefit of clergy. This meeting isdescribed in “History of Greene County, Pennsylvania” by Samuel P.Bates and is recorded as occurring on March 24, 1768. Surprisingly, atthe meeting, the Pennsylvanians, themselves, complained that theVirginia settlers, as individuals, were purchasing the lands from theIndians and were making friends and cooperating and hunting with theIndians. Hans, almost 75 years old, and the other settler s ignored theorder since it came from Pennsylvanians and the settlers consideredthemselves to be in Virginia. Fort Pitt, later Pittsburgh, was in thecontrol of Virginians. The Ohio Company (Virginia businessmen)including George Washington and his brothers was in charge. The matterwas not settled until the fall of 1784, placing the land inPennsylvania. Fort Pitt on the Ohio and Redstone on the Monongahela (now Brownsvillein Fayette County, Pennsylvania) and the area which became Ford Cityin Armstrong County, Pennsylvania were good Indian-trading locationsand also good farm land. However, there were so many miles to walk andso many mountains to climb to get to the eastern seaboard markets that the farmers said that a cash crop had to have four legs to walk out on or go out in jugs on the backs of pack horses. As a result ” Old Monongahela Double Distilled” became famous far and wide. After theRevolution, when the new federal government, as governments always do,began looking for things to tax to raise money, the fame of “OldMonongahela Double Distilled” brought unwanted attention to the area. The result was “The Whiskey Rebellion” which naturally the farmerdistillers of the whiskey lost. Conrad would bring his knowledge ofthe secrets of this famous product to Ohio with him. His son and mygreat-grandfather, William Cook, along with many others would still bedistilling this whiskey in the hills of Adams County and “OldMonongahela Double Distilled” would still be earning money for thefarmer producers and creating mischief for consumers. Thus, its fame lived on for many more years.

Forward to Generations 11-20–>

<–Back to Generation 1-10 quick Link
  • Note: Above List mainly just shows direct ancestors and their children.  It does not list their children and down the line unless they are direct ancestors to Tekla and Jeff Thomann.  I may at some point in time add in more of the family by showing ‘cousins’ childrens’ more in depth further back than one or two generations back, but may not do that since it gets a little complicated after a couple of levels… That level of detail creates more of a ‘forest’ than simply a family tree. If you are interested in that level of detail I’d suggest doing some research and creating your own family tree on familysearch.org to study the different connections that are in the family lines.  After you go back a few generations in there, assuming you have correct information on birth dates, etc., for a few generations the database there will start adding in ‘hints’ to your family tree that will extend it out in to the wild forest that is already out there.  Just be careful to remember that more than a few generations back some data could be not-too-accurate, especially the further back you go…  (I’m pretty sure ‘mother Gaia’ and her mythological children aren’t really one of our direct human ancestors, just as some of the many ancient queens and kings you read about in all history courses  from the prehistoric era probably aren’t all direct ancestors, but if you go further back enough in some of the family lines I’ve seen on familysearch, it does seem to suggest that may be the case… 🙂 )
  • Also Note that I have not put a lot of information about Greg Johnmeyer’s lineage in the above list.  Greg was Tekla’s step-dad.  I may add in some more information about his side of the family above some day when I have more time to spare to work on this project.  Some in-depth information about his side of the family can found at http://thomafamily.org/pedigree.php?personID=I20703&tree=Thoma
